Planting end of April, harvesting in October

Davochfin Farm launched Sutherland’s very first Pumpkin Patch in 2023, to much acclaim. For 2024, Rob and Emma invite you to visit Davochfin at the start of the season to plant and name your very own pumpkin seed, then watch it grow before picking your very own pumpkin in the Autumn.

Pumpkin seeds are planted at the end of April/beginning of May. They like well draining soil and lots of water. Plants can grow up to five feet in length, so can take up lots of room, and have large, yellow flowers that bees love. The bees and other insects carry the pollen from the male flowers to the female flowers to produce pollination. Only female flowers/plants will grow pumpkins.

At Davochfin, we try to grow all the pumpkins we sell here on the farm. Pumpkin plants are very sensitive to the weather. They don’t like it too hot or too cold, which is why we like to harvest our pumpkins before the first real frost - and why we open up the Pumpkin Patch during the second week of the October School holidays for you to come and pick your own.

If you want to get involved in the Pumpkin Patch, please book below to avoid disappointment. Situated a mile out of Dornoch, we look forward to seeing you in October for picking. Make sure you go through the Maize Maze and take lots of Festive photos!
